Grading 101: Why One Wrong Size Breaks the Whole Run

A hoodie fits perfectly in the size M sample. Size XL comes back with sleeves that run short and a collar that gapes at the neck. Nothing about the fabric changed, nothing about the construction changed — only the size did. That's not a fit problem. That's a grading problem, and it was decided long before either sample was cut.

What grading actually does

Grading is the process of scaling a base pattern up or down across a full size range while keeping every proportion correct relative to the others. It sounds like simple math — make it bigger, make it smaller — but a garment doesn't grow uniformly. A chest measurement, a sleeve length, a collar circumference and a hem width don't all need to increase by the same amount between sizes; each point of measure has its own grade rule, based on how bodies actually vary across that range.

Grading isn't making a pattern bigger or smaller — it's deciding how every single measurement point should grow or shrink together, so proportions hold at every size, not just the one that was fitted.

Where grading actually goes wrong

Most grading problems trace back to one of two shortcuts: treating every point of measure as if it scales at the same rate, or applying a generic grade rule instead of one built for that specific silhouette. A fitted jacket and an oversized hoodie don't grow the same way between a Small and an XL — a grade rule copied from one style to another, because "it's roughly the same category," is exactly how a collar starts gaping four sizes away from the one that was actually fitted.

Graded Nest — the check before anything gets approved

A Graded Nest is the complete set of graded patterns for every size, layered directly on top of each other. It's the visual check that catches a grading error before it reaches a cutting table: proportions that should shift smoothly from size to size instead jump unevenly, or a curve that stays identical across sizes when it should have scaled — both immediately visible once every size is stacked in one place, and much harder to spot looking at one pattern at a time.

This is also why a Size Set Sample — a full run of samples across every size, made only after the fit sample is approved and the pattern graded — exists as its own checkpoint, separate from the single fit sample that gets all the early attention. A style can fit beautifully in the size that was actually tried on a body and still be quietly wrong everywhere else, if grading was never checked against more than that one size.

Getting the pattern graded correctly is one job. Making sure the samples along the way — proto, fit, pre-production — are each answering a different question is another, and it's exactly where confusion tends to creep in next.
