DIBA vs BOM: Are They the Same Document?

A factory in Italy asks for "la DIBA" for a new style. The same week, the head office asks for "the BOM" for that exact style. For a moment it looks like two documents are missing. Only one is — because DIBA and BOM were never two different things to begin with.

Same document, two names

DIBA stands for Distinta Base — literally "base list" — the standard Italian manufacturing term for exactly what English-language supply chains call a Bill of Materials. Same fields, same purpose, same job: every component in a garment, with quantity and supplier, in one place. The Lexicon lists them under a single entry, "BOM (Bill of Materials) / DIBA," because there's no meaningful technical difference to separate them by.

DIBA isn't a different document from the BOM — it's the same document, wearing whichever name the person asking for it happens to use.

Where the confusion actually comes from

Most fashion supply chains that touch Italian manufacturing are bilingual by default: pattern makers and factory floors working in Italian, brand teams and international buyers working in English. Nobody sat down and decided the terminology should split — it split naturally, because each side kept using the word familiar to them for a document neither side invented from scratch.

The problem shows up when someone assumes the two names must mean two different files. That assumption has a real cost: a team builds a BOM in English for head office, then separately assembles a DIBA in Italian for the factory floor, treating them as two things to keep "in sync" — when in reality there was only ever one document that needed writing once, in whichever language made sense for who was reading it.

What actually deserves the attention

The real risk was never which term gets used. It's the same one covered in what actually goes into a BOM: a missing trim, an unconfirmed thread consumption, a packaging component left as "TBD." Translating the label correctly from BOM to DIBA — or the other way around — does nothing to fix a gap like that. Completeness is the job that matters; the name on the header is not.
